April update 2

A few weeks after getting a greenhouse full of transplants to the field.  They are looking great!

April Update

We have been hard at it here recently.  Planting as much as possible and then covering stuff when the frosts and freezes arrive.  But all has been progressing well.  Haven’t been blogging as regularly as normal so I thought I would share some photos of recent happenings around here!

Delta Sun Farm CSA is Open!

Community Supported Agriculture Program

CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture.  It is an innovative concept that is helping secure a future for family farms all over the country.  It’s basically an agreement between the farmer and a community of consumers.  The consumer purchases a “Membership” which gives the Farmer a payment in the beginning of the year when they need it most to pay for seed, supplies, labor, etc.

In return, the Consumer, or Member, receives a weekly Subscription box of Fresh, Seasonal, and Organic Produce.  It is very rewarding for both the Farmer and the Community.  The Member or Shareholder gains the satisfaction of knowing they are supporting a Local, Sustainable, Family Farm while feeling a closer connection to the land, the Farmer who grows their food, and the beautiful abundance of food the Seasons have to offer.

Our CSA program provides our customers with at least 24 weeks of our fresh produce for the 2012 growing season which will run from May through mid Nov.  Each week our CSA members will receive a half bushel share of our freshest, seasonal, highest quality produce, grown by us.  To be picked up at a centralized location.  Our current pick up spots are the 12 South Market in Nashville on Tues. afternoons from3:30-6:30, the Nashville Farmers Market every Saturday morning, and the Hendersonville Farmers market at the Streets of Indian Lake every Saturday morning.

Here is a list of some of the Organic produce you can expect to receive throughout the Spring and Summer:  Strawberries, tomatoes, garlic, squash, lettuce, spring salad mix, arugula, braising and Asian greens, beets, kale, zucchini, summer squash, watermelons, cantaloupe, peppers of many varieties, cucumbers, radish, sunflowers, garlic flowers, basil, cilantro, dill, etc., potatoes, broccoli, carrots, onions, scallions, broccoli raab, cabbage, peas, beans, eggplant, spinach, heads of lettuce…and you can always expect a few surprises!

The yearly membership fee is $500.

Farm Morning

Updates and Thanks

We have been getting a lot done around the farm.  Yesterday and today Caitlin, my brother Bruce and I tilled and built beds.  We planted a good many strawberry plants, bulbing onions, purple scallions, more shallots,  moved the pigs way across the field to green pastures and they are very happy.   I hope to get some photos up tomorrow.  Just wanted to put out a quick update.  And the kickstarter is moving right along.  We broke the $3,500 mark today but only a month to go!  So please help spread the word and consider donating to support our small farm if you haven’t already.  Here is the kickstarter link..

Thanks much!

What a day to be a plant!

It has been such a joy to work the past couple of weeks.  In spite of our fair share of thunderstorms, the temperature has been very encouraging for us, the germinating seeds, and the transplants that have been set out to harden off.  Just to think, a few short weeks ago it all started out with plans for a greenhouse and a mess of seeds…

A variety of seeds germinating and sprouting: spinach, beets, artichokes, heirloom tomatoes and beans, brussel sprouts, cabbage. squash, cucumbers, okra, chard, asparagus, pak choi, etc.  We are very excited for our CSA members this season!

Broccoli babies.

Lettuce

A variety of goodies…

Sugar snap and snow peas!

Kale, leeks, red mustard, romaine, red boston, iceberg, and green leaf lettuce, black-eyed peas, and strawberries almost ready to be transplanted to the field.

Beets and carrots, very tasty!

So are the red kale and red bordeaux spinach!

The garlic, onions, and shallots are coming along and the field is ready for more transplants.
